Communications Director
Curioso is a collective of 50+ creatives working across studios in Chicago, and Mérida, Mexico. Our work is to design unique and meaningful experiences for people, primarily through the lens of luxury hospitality design. Nurturing our community of creative talent is central to that mission, and as we scale across two countries and multiple studios, we need a single leader who can build and own the people function end to end.
Position Overview
The Communications Director is responsible for maintaining the external brand reputation of Curioso, overseeing marketing and communications strategies that support company goals and business development objectives. The Communications Director drives internal communications, ensuring clear and cohesive messaging for employees across the design and business studios. The Communications Director sits on the Curioso directors' bench.
Brand & Marketing
Uphold Curioso brand standards, ensuring clear, consistent messaging across the firm’s portfolios, website, proposals, press materials, and social media
Develop and oversee communication strategies that support company goals and business objectives
Lead strategic planning of all professional content creation for photography & videography, in coordination with client teams and vendors
Lead Curioso’s In-House publication strategies, including editorial planning, project management, vendor coordination, and hands-on content creation as needed
Establish and maintain Marketing & Communication budgets
Lead client and collaborator relationship opportunities, including curated events, client gifting, and other touchpoints of strategic communication
Oversee strategic award and public relations strategies, including press relationships, speaking opportunities, and thought leadership tracks, in coordination with Curioso’s PR firm of record
Oversee the continued development of all Business Cultivation tools and collateral, including portfolios, case studies, and proposal templates
Oversee digital analytics assessments, applying learnings to long-term strategies and decision-making
Maintain an understanding of the competitive landscape, industry trends, and emerging marketing techniques
Internal Communications
Lead internal communication strategies, establishing processes and best practices for firm-wide announcements and initiatives
Lead strategy, planning, and production of Curioso all-hands meetings (Studio Chat) in coordination with People & Culture
Oversee the continued development and maintenance of Curioso’s intranet (The Bear Den)
Team Development & Mentorship
The Communications Director oversees the Marketing Associate
Lead team vision and values, establishing a collaborative environment, encouraging creative independence, and inspiring excellence
Organize and prioritize tasks and responsibilities among team members
Ensure team members are adequately equipped with appropriate resources for the effective execution of their roles & responsibilities
Oversee team member salaries and benefits, conducting annual performance reviews and encouraging growth opportunities
Requirements
7-10+ years of experience in communications or marketing, ideally within architecture, interior design, or another creative field
Excellent writing and editing skills, with a portfolio of published or produced work (marketing/press materials, web copy, social campaigns, etc.)
Proven ability to build and execute holistic, end-to-end marketing campaigns, from strategy and concept through execution and measurement
Defined creative and artistic taste, with an eye for design quality consistent with the studio's aesthetic
Working knowledge of graphic design principles, photography direction (styling, shot lists, art direction on set), social media strategy, and website development/management (Squarespace preferred)
Experience managing external vendors and freelance contractors (photographers, stylists, PR agencies, designers) on budget and on brief
Experience managing and developing a direct report, with the ability to delegate effectively while maintaining quality and consistency
Experience leading internal communications, including firm-wide announcements, culture and engagement initiatives, and keeping staff aligned on brand and messaging
Comfortable operating at the executive level, presenting to and collaborating directly with principals/leadership
Ability to effectively translate business goals into applicable communications strategies
Compensation: Comprehensive benefits package and travel possible, contingent on role.
Location: Chicago, IL, with regular collaboration across the Mérida studio. Some travel to Mérida expected.
